Bluetooth Versus AirPlay: Which is Better? | December, 2019

Bluetooth was created as a means of connecting keyboards and the pC mouse, migrating to earpieces and taking on a more audio centric role. High end audio is not what it delivers though. Speaker and audio devices that use Bluetooth have lower quality and the format is not designed for more than MP3 in most cases though aptX codec allows streaming that is high resolution. Initial pairing has also changed as the Bluetooth does not require a local Wi-Fi network. AirPlay is a networking streaming system working with Wi-Fi and the wireless network is needed for ensuring functionality. Strength of AirPlay an Apple technology is that it uses UDP for streaming audio which offers a lower overhead. The Apple Lossless codec makes up audio streams. Stereo audio is sent at 44.1 KHz with AES encryption. Audio source data is transmitted via AirPlay sent with no processing and zero deterioration in bit depth.
